Common Red Flags to Watch For
Incorrect Personal Information
Spelling errors in your name, wrong date of birth, or mismatched passport details can cause serious issues.
Always double-check that your I-20 exactly matches your passport.
Unclear Funding Sources
Your I-20 must show that you have enough financial support for your first year of study.
Weak, vague, or unrealistic funding details can raise doubts during your visa interview.
Incorrect program type
(Ex: wrong major or wrong degree level — bachelor’s vs. master’s)
Funding sources unclear or unsupported
Visa officers need to see clear proof of how you’ll pay for your studies
Wrong or missing SEVIS ID number
Your SEVIS ID connects your visa, embassy interview, and I-901 payment
Mismatched Major or Degree Level
