I-20 Red Flags
Why Your I-20 Matters So Much
The I-20 form is more than just a document — it’s your official certification that a U.S. school has accepted you and that you’re eligible for an F-1 student visa.
However, small mistakes, missing details, or inconsistencies on your I-20 can cause major problems during the visa process, at the embassy, or even at the airport.
Knowing what to check (and what can cause issues) is critical before you schedule your visa interview.
Common Red Flags to Watch For
Incorrect Personal Information
Spelling errors in your name, wrong date of birth, or mismatched passport details can cause serious issues.
Always double-check that your I-20 exactly matches your passport.
Unclear Funding Sources
Your I-20 must show that you have enough financial support for your first year of study.
Weak, vague, or unrealistic funding details can raise doubts during your visa interview.
Incorrect program type
(Ex: wrong major or wrong degree level — bachelor’s vs. master’s)
Funding sources unclear or unsupported
Visa officers need to see clear proof of how you’ll pay for your studies
Wrong or missing SEVIS ID number
Your SEVIS ID connects your visa, embassy interview, and I-901 payment
Mismatched Major or Degree Level
If your educational history doesn’t logically connect to your new program, the visa officer might question the credibility of your study plan.
What Happens if There’s a Mistake?
If you notice an error before your visa interview:
- ➔ Contact your university immediately for a corrected I-20.
If a visa officer points it out during your interview:
- ➔ They may ask you to return later with a corrected I-20 — delaying your visa approval.
If discovered at the port of entry:
- ➔ You could be refused entry or asked to fix the issue before continuing.
